感動ポルノ Inspirational Porn

‘Inspirational Porn’ is a term introduced by Australian disability rights activist Stella Young when she gave a TED Talk in 2014. It refers to how people with disabilities are seen as objects of ‘inspiration’ just because of their disability.

She argued that people with disabilities are objectified for the benefit of those without. One salient point she brought up was the concept of the social model of disability, where people with disabilities are disabled mostly by the society they live in rather than by their own disabilities.

Perhaps many a time, society tends to have low expectations of people with disabilities, such that we do not see them for who they really are or what they are capable of achieving as a person, and not as someone with disabilities.
